This is the total economic cost to the economy from gun violence.  This is equal to 2.6% of the US Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and is 5 times the budget of the US Department of Education.

On gun violence in schools, Rep. Tim Burchett (R-TN) just accepts defeat and says "We're not gonna fix it."  In an average year, 1,385 people die by guns in Tennessee and 1121 in Virginia.

Executive Order to reduce gun violence.

President Biden announced an Executive Order with the goal of increasing the number of background checks conducted before firearm sales, moving the U.S. as close to universal background checks as possible without additional legislation.
  • Increase the number of background checks by ensuring that all background checks required by law are conducted before firearm purchases, moving the U.S. as close to universal background checks as possible without additional legislation.
  • Improve public awareness and increase appropriate use of extreme risk protection (“red flag”) orders and safe storage of firearms.
  • Address the loss or theft of firearms during shipping.
  • Provide the public and policymakers with more information regarding federally licensed firearms dealers who are violating the law.
  • Use the Department of Defense’s acquisition of firearms to further firearm and public safety practices.
  • Help catch shooters by accelerating federal law enforcement’s reporting of ballistics data.
  • Accelerate and intensify implementation of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act (BSCA).
  • Improve federal support for gun violence survivors, victims and survivors’ families, first responders to gun violence, and communities affected by gun violence.
  • Advance congressional efforts to prevent the proliferation of firearms undetectable by metal detectors.

Awesome Newsom !

 Last year, Governor Gavin Newsom announced that California was going to wield the power of the 5th largest economy in the world to ... no, not ban the mention of periods in school or ban books or ban drag shows or ban LGBTQ rights ,,, but to shape the medication market for the benefit of all Americans. How, pray tell, is he going to do that ?  California is going to make it's own insulin and sell it at near cost. Last week at a press conference, Newsom announced that California has secured a contract with a generic insulin manufacturer , Civica, to begin making some of the most common types of insulin (glargine, lispro and aspart) towards the end of the year. Warning !  Greetings, Soon, this part of the Staunton Democrats blog will be filled with details about Democrat led achievements such as the recent Inflation Reduction Act.  We will try to focus on local accomplishments as well as state and national.
